Computer Speakers
Computer speaker prices have dropped so much that it is possible to get decent Logitech ones, in 2.1 configuration (2 speakers and 1 subwoofer), for as little as $30. Because of this do not buy speakers without a subwoofer. Difference in sound between two speakers with and without subwoofer is extraordinary. You can get two cheap speakers for $10 (which will give you slightly better sound than your radio alarm clock) but why not invest extra $15-$20 to get much better sound.
Good quality 2.1 speakers are enough for most users. But if you want to play music really loud and play games with surround sound, you should get a decent 5.1 configuration. Don't think that buying 5.1 speakers is necessarily better than any 2.1 speakers. Just Logitech have 5.1 speakers selling for less than $60, and also a 2.1 speakers selling for over $100. However, for most users $60 5.1 speakers will be just fine, even if you want to play music really loud! Make sure you check Total RMS power, before buying speakers. This can explain to some extent, why some speakers are more and some less expensive.
If you are really serious about gaming, there is nothing better than good surround sound headphones (yes, these are available, just do some research).
As a reference, at any time, speakers in 2.1 configuration, in the $30 price range will be enough for the most users.
If you want better ones, for example 5.1 configuration, $60-$80 should do it.
